NEW STAR CHILDREN'S THEATRE
ALUMNI
Lorna Batycki, Alumni 1986-1989
Life is crazy busy! I live in Western Canada, kind of far and away from everyone
else. I have three kids, all boys ranging from 3 years of age to 11....I used to
work as a t.v. news anchor but now I have the pleasure of running a Musical
Theatre Studio and working with about 200 kids per year. I'm still doing theatre
and just fiinished directing a full production of Seussical the Musical with a cast
of 50 for a local company. I have worked on some professional stuff as well and
moonlight as a casting director for commercials and some film stuff. Life has kind
of gone full circle. I left Hamilton to work in the "real world" and I did that for a
looong time and now I'm back doing what I love which is theatre. All the stuff I
did with New Star way back when has served me well!!!!

Brad McGreggor, alumni 1994-1997
Brad Mcgreggor is the associate producer for a film co in Toronto, called Media
Headquarters (MHQ). They make docs, special features for CBC and NFB and also
TV shows. One of the shows he worked on last year was up for a Daytime Emmy
"The Great Polar Bear Adventure" a family film with Megan Fellowes, Howie Mandel
and Don Cherry. He is presently heavily involved in a reality show for Slice
Network (formerly Life) called "Outlaw Inlaws" - you can guess what it is about.
He is working on development of a few of others, one a children's show, a sports
show and a food show. He is waiting for the big feature! But he really likes
documentaries, which was the focus of his degree. He has his school debts but
has finally gotten his first solo apartment. He works his touche off but he is well
respected.
Rosalie Fallis, alumni 1991-2002
I have been up to a lot since New Star! In my last year of high school I auditioned in Ottawa for Mamma Mia! and went to 5
callbacks for the lead Sophie. I didn't end up getting the part so I went to The randolph academy for the performing arts for
musical theatre. It was a 2 year program consisting of acting, singing and dancing. We performed a play(Lion in the streets
-sherry) and a musical( into the woods- cinderella) to the public. An agent in the crowd of our play saw me and gave me a call
wanting to represent me. Once I graduated I began auditioning and Landed my first part in a professional show called Suds.
It was a sweet deal. It was Equity and I was the lead Cindy and was performing with a really big name in Toronto Sharron
Matthews. We toured Ontario and performed in beautiful theatres to crowds of 900. It was a great first experiance.I
continued to audition and moved on to film an epidosde of final 24 and an a halloween special for the UK called True Vampire.
I then moved to Fergus Ontario for the summer and got a contract for three shows, I do, I do-( agnus) , Side by Side By
sondhiem (woman 1) and Dames at Sea-(Ruby). I moved back to Toronto and Filmed 2 commercials for Montanna's
cookhouse and then went on to do a show with the same company of Suds called afternoon in the park where i played Gen.
Then I got a job playing little mermaid in the tales of hans Christian Anderson touring across canada for 3 months. That was
crazy and exhausting! I was very happy to get back to home and my boyfriend George. I then got pregnant with our Son
Ethan and am taking the year off to be with him and get back in shape. Then i'm going to get back at it! So i'll have to fill you
in with where my life takes me!!!
I hope your doing great!
let me know your latest news!

Appearing on Triple Sensation changed lives of Ottawa artists Tony Lofaro , The
Ottawa Citizen Published: Friday, October 19, 2007
All Jamie Hodgins and Ben Durocher can do now is wait for the winner to be
announced on tomorrow night's finale of CBC's new theatrical reality series, Triple
Sensation. The Ottawa-performers were part of an ensemble for the series, which
held auditions for thousands of hopefuls across Canada and were among the 12
selected for the final cast. Each performer had to sing, dance and act before a panel
of judges, which included theatrical producer Garth Drabinsky, the TV show's
producer. Not only that, the finalists also attended a rigorous "master class" where
they were put through the paces by some of the best-known stage directors,
choreographers and actors in the business. The intensive training and studying
gave them a taste of what the show-business life is like and they all they want it
badly. Jamie Hodgins is one of the 12 national finalists on Triple Sensation, the
major performing arts television event on CBC.View Larger Image View Larger Image
Jamie Hodgins is one of the 12 national finalists on Triple Sensation, the major
performing arts television event on CBC. "I've traded my office jobs for a full-time
performance career," said Jamie Hodgins, 24, who became known as the "hip-hop"
guy on the show. "Right now I'm working on movie sets in Toronto as an extra,
teaching hip hop to pay the bills and just trying to get an agent. "Triple Sensation
has changed my life," said Hodgins, the oldest member of the cast, who grew up in
the Bayshore area and went to St. Paul High School. The finale airs tomorrow at 8
p.m. on CBC. The winner gets a $150,000 scholarship prize to study at one of the
best theatrical training schools in the world. For Ben Durocher, auditioning and
attending master class was "an incredible experience" he will never forget.
"Getting to work with all these incredible teachers and learning so much on a daily
basis is something that isn't very common," said 18-year-old Durocher, who
graduated in June from Canterbury High School's drama program. "It was incredibly
inspiring. And to be with people who not only shared your passion and your drive
but who are nice and talented themselves really made you want to work hard," said
Durocher, who admits his acting and singing abilities are stronger than his dancing.
Unlike most judges on other performance reality series, the judges on Triple
Sensation offered helpful tips, he said. "They were very receptive and open in the
audition situation at least, and any time that criticism was given it was constructive
and it wasn't intended to make anyone look stupid or look bad. They really had
integrity in everything they did." Durocher, who is studying musical theatre at the
University of Cincinnati, said being on the show was a good learning experience
that taught him things that he'll be able to use as a performer. "The most important
thing I learned was not holding back and making everything you do, whether you're
singing or dancing, that you put your whole self into it. "A lot of people miss that
when they're performing. They think they have to put something over top of them,
instead of being swept inside of them." He said a career in show business is not the
glamorous ride that many think it is. "Someone who maybe thought this is what
they would want to do I don't think would have been able to make it through
master class," said Durocher. "The judges picked 12 people who had an endless
amount of drive, passion and spirit, all things incredibly important in the business,"
he said. Hodgins, who wants a career as a hip-hop dancer, said the show is a step
above other performance reality series. "Triple Sensation is like So You Think You
Can Dance? meets Canadian Idol but with actual integrity. It's focused on education
and the prize isn't a one-way ticket to Hollywood. It's a reminder that it does take a
lot of hard work (to get there)," he said. Drabinsky, the controversial producer who
has staged such productions as Show Boat, Kiss of the Spider Woman and Ragtime,
came up with the idea for the show.

1. What years were you a part of New Star (approx) and where(location)?
I was a member from age 9 through 16. That was from 1983(4)-1996. My first play was Musicland, but I can't remember it at
all....
2. How many plays were you in with New Star?
I think it was over 16, though I'm not entirely sure.
3. Please list the ones you can remember
I'm cheating a bit 'cause I have a lot of the programmes...
-Musicland -The Wizard of Oz (x2) -Orville's Revenge -While the Cats Away -The Frog Prince -Cinderella -Snow White and the 17
Dwarves -Sound of Music -Peter Pan, etc.
What were your favorite roles and why?
My favorite, hands down, was Riff in West Side Story. I was doing the "leading man roles" and was happy to shift gears. I got a
death scene and a fight scene.
What was your all time favorite song you got to sing in a New Star Production?
"When You're a Jet"
For which role did you enjoy the COSTUME the most?
Again, Riff. A pair of green tights or a lion suit vs. Jeans and a T-shirt? (Riff's costume was Jeans and a T-shirt)
Did you ever do tech or assistant direct, etc, with New Star, and if you did, tell us about what you did...
I think I did near everything. I painted and designed sets, worked lights and curtains, helped with sound, assistant directed... I
think the only thing I kept away from was choreography.
Do you still remain in contact with New Star friends (other than the ones you have re-connected with here)
I've been fairly lucky and stayed in on and off contact with them over the years. I lost touch with most in the past few years
and facebook has helped me track down a few I lost during moves, or travelling. But I've managed to keep at least one or two
people from New Star days around most of the time.
After New Star, did you continue to perform, and if you did, please tell us some of the highlights...
Nope. I hung up my acting career and turned to the other arts. However, I do a mean murder mystery night performance.
Are you married now? Do you have children?
Recently married, but no kids.
What are you doing with your life (careerwise/schoolwise)?
These days I'm a book designer for a publishing house in Vancouver. I've been designing books for a few years now. Before
that, I designed murals for casinos, and before that I did some book illustration.
What is your favorite quote?
My favourite quote... hmm....
Pretty much all of TS Eliot's "The Wasteland and Other Poems"
